Sensex gains over 200 points; oil & gas, metal stocks up

Supported by gains in the oil & gas and metal stocks, the Indian benchmark index continued to trade higher in late morning on Tuesday. Among the individual stocks, Reliance Industries extended gains over 2 per cent on continued optimism over better-than-expected first quarter earnings. Bharti Airtel, Hindalco, Coal India and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, were among notable gainers. The market sentiment was seen positive due to encouraging corporate earnings and sustained foreign capital inflows coupled with a firming trend on other Asian bourses. Shares of Sun Pharmaceutical jumped over 1 per cent on news of USD 4 billion merger of Ranbaxy Labs with Sun Pharma.
At 11:15 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 25937.44 up by 222.27 points or by 0.86 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 7747.1 up by 62.9 points or by 0.82 per cent.
The broader market was moving above baseline. The BSE MIDCAP was at 9364.75 up by 64.33 points or by 0.69 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10356.2 up by 86.61 points or by 0.84 per cent.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE out of total shares traded 2527, shares advanced were 1538 while 886 shares declined and 103 were unchanged.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 350.50,+3.99%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1024.00,+2.67%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 187.45,+2.18%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 385.00,+1.72%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 754.50,+1.42%), among others.
Among the thirteen sectoral indices on BSE, Oil & Gas index was trading at 11006.67 up by 172.05 points or by 1.59 per cent. Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1024.00,+2.67%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 588.10,+1.26%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 332.10,+1.05%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 394.05,+0.92%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 409.00,+0.60%), were among the notable gainers on BSE.
Following the Oil & Gas index, Metal index was at 13418.63 up by 184.37 points or by 1.39 per cent. Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 187.45,+2.18%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 385.00,+1.72%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 166.50,+1.40%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 299.50,+1.34%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 298.70,+1.32%), were among others.
