Gold seizures surges to Rs 678 crore in FY14: Media report

Given the continued import restriction on gold, yellow metal saw sharp rise in smuggling activities during 2013-14 as the value of precious metal seized surged to Rs 678 crore from Rs 94 crore a year ago, PTI report. According to data provided by the CBEC and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence to the Finance Ministry, airports in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Calicut reported maximum cases of seizures of illegal gold, reported PTI. The data highlighted that the Customs department has detected 2,419 cases of seizures with value of Rs 678 crore. In 2012-13, they had detected 919 cases with the value of gold seized at Rs 94 crore.
