Tourism sector records 17% growth in Aug

At a time when tourism industry is facing tough situation due to ongoing geo-political tension around the world, Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India reported a growth of 16.9 per cent in August to 5.69 lakh, as per data released by Ministry of Tourism. “FTAs during the Month of August 2013 were 4.86 lakh and 4.46 lakh in August 2012,” the data highlighted. The tourist arrival during the period January-August 2014 were 46.84 lakh with a growth of 7.4 per cent, as compared to the FTAs of 43.60 lakh with a growth of 4.9 per cent during January-August 2013 over the corresponding period of 2012. The surge in foreign tourist in India was led by Bangladesh with 14.03 per cent, followed by US, UK and Sri Lanka with 12.74 per cent, 9.22 per cent and 6.79 per cent, respectively. The Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) from tourism during the month of August 2014 were Rs 10,254 crore as compared to Rs 8,351 crore in August 2013 and Rs 7,260 crore in August 2012. EE from tourism in rupee terms during January-August 2014 were Rs 77,350 crore with a growth of 12.8 per cent, as compared to the FEE of Rs 68,558 crore with a growth of 15.4 per cent during January-August 2013 over the corresponding period of 2012.
