The key domestic benchmarks may open on a negative note today tracking a bearish trend in stock markets across Asia after G20 finance chiefs and central bankers stressed that low interest rates may give rise to financial market risks as leading economies depend on monetary stimulus to boost economic growth. China’s Shanghai Composite fell as the country’s Finance Minister warned that growth in the world’s second biggest economy faced downward pressure. Hang Seng tumbled while Japan’s Nikkei 225 was trading lower as a stronger yen dimmed the appeal of exporter stocks. Back home, the Sensex may witness volatility this week amid the expiry of the September futures and options (F&O) contracts this Thursday. Meanwhile, markets may be in consolidation mode after the longest stretch of weekly increases in over two years. In the near-term, the direction of the market will depend on the RBI policy review on September 30 where the apex back may maintain status quo on interest rates, while Prime Minister Modi’s US visit will also be keenly eyed.

The key domestic benchmarks are likely to witness a positive opening today tracking a mostly bullish trend in Asian markets as investors bet on further monetary stimulus in the Euro area. China’s Shanghai Composite rose even as industrial profit growth weakened last month, fueling concerns over a slowdown in the world’s second biggest economy. Industrial profits in China grew 13.5 per cent in July 2014 from the same month a year ago, compared to an annual 17.9 per cent rise in June 2014. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell as a weaker yen dimmed the appeal of exporter stocks.

Back home, a record high closing on Wednesday signaled bullish investor sentiment amid hopes that the Modi government to start delivering more on the reform front after the government raised the FDI cap in the defence sector from 26 per cent to 49 per cent. The Sensex may witness some volatility ahead of the expiry of the August Futures and Options (F&O) contracts today, and a holiday tomorrow on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. Investors will be eying the Q1 GDP data to be released tomorrow which may show that the economy expanded at the fastest pace in two years with GDP expected to have grown 5.5 per cent, year on year in the April-June period, up from an annual 4.6 per cent expansion in Q4 FY 2013-14.

The key domestic benchmarks are tipped to open lower today tracking a bearish trend in major Asian markets as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East dim the appeal of risky assets. A dip in US new home sales to the lowest level in four months in July signaled fresh doubts over the recovery in the world’s biggest economy, weighing on sentiment across Asian bourses. Sales of new homes in the US declined 2.4 per cent to an annualized pace of 412,000 in July 2014 over the previous month. China’s Shanghai Composite and Hang Seng were trading lower on concerns over slowing bank lending. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell as a stronger yen dimmed the appeal of exporter stocks.

Back home, the Sensex may come under pressure as the Supreme Court’s decision to declare all coal blocks allocated since 1993 as illegal may hit metal and mining stocks, while the decision may lead to fuel shortages, complicating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bid to revive Asia’s third biggest economy. The Sensex may see some volatility ahead of the expiry of August F&O contracts this Thursday while caution may persist ahead of Q1 GDP data likely to be released on Friday.
