Sensex surges on heavy buying
The benchmark index Sensex surged one percent in the morning trade as we inch closer towards vital events – May 13 (exit polls) followed by election outcome results on May 16. Heavy buying was seen in rate sensitive and cyclical stocks. Barring pharma all BSE sectoral indices were trading in green.
At 11:17AM BSE SENSEX was at 22596.57 up by 252.53 points or by 1.13 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 6734.05 up by 74.2 points or by 1.11 per cent. The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 140.75,+3.15%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 869.00,+2.33%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1330.00,+2.28%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 77.95,+2.16%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1316.25,+2.08%), among others.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2712.00,-0.97%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 179.15,-0.47%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 623.30,-0.22%), among others.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2178, shares advanced were 1260 while 810 shares declined and 108 were unchanged.
