Post Session: Sensex ends lower ahead of Union

The Dalal-Street witnessed another weak session on Wednesday as investors remained cautious ahead of the Union Budget to be presented by Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, on Thursday. The sentiment was damped by Economic Survey report which raised concern over economic environment. Arun Jaitley while presenting the Economic Survey 2014-15 pegged the GDP growth between 5.4 to 5.9 per cent. Among the thirteen sectoral indices, all the sectoral indices, except oil & gas, FMCG and consumer durables, ended significantly in the red in choppy trade.
The BSE SENSEX closed at 25444.81 down by 137.3 points or by 0.54 per cent and the NSE Nifty ended at 7585 down by 38.2 points or by 0.5 per cent.
During the day’s trade, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 25683.97 and intraday low of 25364.77, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 7650.1 and intraday low of 7551.65.
Bucking the trend, the broader market also closed lower. The BSE MIDCAP closed at 9077.36 down by 132.85 points or by 1.44 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP ended at 9944.15 down by 183.86 points or by 1.82 per cent.
On the Sectoral front, auto and power indices declined 2.43 per cent and 1.69 per cent, respectively.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3191, shares advanced were 943 while 2148 shares declined and 100 were unchanged.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 517.30,-3.51%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2168.95,-3.12%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 365.65,-2.97%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 2519.95,-2.70%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1181.90,-2.54%), among others.
On the flip side, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 404.65,+1.77%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 341.40,+1.67%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 458.60,+1.26%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 170.90,+1.21%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1000.05,+0.49%), were among notable gainers on BSE.
