Post Session-Sensex snaps 4-day rally on profit booking

Snapping a four-day winning streak, the key domestic benchmarks closed tad lower on Thursday as investors indulged in profit booking after benchmarks surged to record highs. Trading at Dalal Street was halted for three hours due to a connectivity issue. A subdued trend in fellow Asian peers amid caution ahead of the US jobs data also weighed on sentiment.

However, robust services data signaled an end to the slowdown in Asia’s third biggest economy, curbing losses in stocks. Services activity in India grew at the fastest clip in 17 months in June 2014 as the PMI rose to 54.4 from 50.2 in the previous month, with a reading above 50 signaling expansion, HSBC and Markit Economics said in a report on Thursday.

The BSE SENSEX closed at 25,823.75, down by 17.46 points or by 0.07 per cent, and the NSE Nifty ended at 7,714.8, down by 10.35 points or by 0.13 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 25,999.08 and intraday low of 25,793.7 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 7,754.65 and intraday low of 7,706.8. Meanwhile, the BSE MIDCAP closed at 9,490.58, down by 16.32 points or by 0.17 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP ended at 10,419.38, down by 14.8 points or by 0.14 per cent.

On the Sectoral front, Realty and Oil & Gas shed 1.47 per cent and 1.19 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2952, shares advanced were 1324 while 1517 shares declined and 111 were unchanged.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2589.40,-3.17%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 173.75,-2.47%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2295.35,-2.39%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 418.20,-1.99%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 106.90,-1.88%), among others.
