The Ministry of Power on Sunday said that coal-based electricity generation from June to August 2014 grew by a record 21 per cent compared to corresponding period last year. “The government is committed to ensure affordable 24x7 power supply for all and to ensure this it has provided adequate coal supply to power plants,” Ministry of Power said in a press release. In its 100 days in office, the government has given an in-principle approval to CIL to purchase 250 additional rakes (for Rs 5,000 crores) to evacuate more coal, it said. Moreover, the government is expediting build-out of 3 critical railway lines in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha, which could potentially yield 60 million tons per annum by 2017-18 and up to 200 million tons by 2021-22. Automatic transfer of linkages is being allowed from old & inefficient plants ( for less than 25 year old plants), the release highlighted.
