Post-Market: Sensex ends flat, NIFTY down by 8.05

After a spectacular bull-run ahead of Modi’s oath ceremony as the 15th Prime Minister of India, the markets witnessed a flat closing due to profit-booking. The prime ministerial cabinet to be announced later today drove the investor sentiments to a cautious note with key sectoral stocks witnessing a drag. IT and auto stocks lend major support to the market despite appreciating rupee while Oil & Gas and Realty indices plummeted steeply due to profit booking at high levels. Bankex also closed in red. But the biggest crash was seen in midcap and small cap stocks with both the indices losing over 2 percent each from previous close. BSE Mid-cap ended down 3.4 per cent and Small-cap index ended down 3.7 per cent. At the end of today’s session, the markets recorded the fourth highest turnover at Rs 4.74 lakh crore. The India VIX, a key measure of market’s expected volatility soared 12 per cent to end at 19.81.
At 3:58PM BSE SENSEX was at 24716.88 up by 23.53 points or by 0.1 per cent and the NSE Nifty was at 7359.05 down by 8.05 points or by 0.11 per cent.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1230.30,+6.23%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 279.20,+4.24%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 504.55,+3.18%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 443.30,+2.76%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1544.20,+2.16%), among others.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 259.40,-4.79%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 101.40,-4.11%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 410.05,-3.64%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 147.15,-3.19%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 156.35,-2.49%), among others.
The top gainers of the NSE Nifty pack were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1229.15,+6.03%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 279.20,+4.04%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1386.20,+3.37%), Wipro Ltd. (Rs. 506.00,+3.27%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 444.05,+2.96%), among others.

In BSE, BSE Auto index was at 14794.89 up by 214.15 points and BSE, BSE_IT index was at 8563.69 up by 123.63 points. The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3280, shares advanced were 1436 while 1724 shares declined and 120 were unchanged.
Asian markets closed firm at the end of today’s trade taking cues from upbeat U.S. housing data released on Friday and easing of tensions in Ukraine after Petro Poroshenko emerged victorious in the presidential election held on Sunday. He has been given an opportunity to resolve the long lasting conflict between the west and Russia and ensure political stability. For the rest of the week, investors will be eyeing a slew of U.S. data, including reports on durable goods orders, consumer confidence, and personal income and spending for further signs of economic recovery.
