Pre Session-Cautious opening likely for Sensex amid weak global cues, WPI data
eyed
The key domestic benchmarks are likely to open on a cautious note today tracking a mostly bearish trend in Asian markets and a negative closing at Wall Street overnight. Most Asian stocks fell today as US stocks retreated from record highs while investors remained cautious ahead of US inflation, factory output and jobless claims data. China’s Shanghai Composite fell while Hang Seng rose and Japan’s Nikkei 225 was trading lower as a stronger yen dimmed the appeal of exporter stocks, even as the Japanese economy grew at the fastest pace since 2011 in Q1 2014, expanding by an annualized 5.9 per cent from the previous quarter. Back home, investors will be eying the wholesale price inflation data which may show an elevated pace of inflation in April, leaving little room for policy easing. Some profit booking may be seen ahead of the election results tomorrow even as exit polls showed a victory for the more growth and investor friendly BJP party.
US stocks ended in the red on Wednesday as benchmarks retreated from a record high dragged lower by a sell-off in small cap and internet shares. Investors were cautious ahead of the speech of the Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen on Thursday where she may continue to back stimulus to support growth and employment in the world’s biggest economy. Events in Ukraine also weighed on sentiment with the country on the brink of a civil war as pro-Russian rebels lock horns with government troops. On the economic front, US wholesale prices rose at the fastest pace since September 2012 in April 2014, easing risks of a deflation. The wholesale price index rose by 0.6 per cent in April 2014 over the previous month, the Commerce Department said. All three of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 ended lower.
