Sensex open on a flat note ahead of WPI data, poll results

The key domestic benchmarks opened on a flat note today as most investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of the poll results tomorrow which may confirm a return to power for the BJP. Caution also prevailed ahead of the wholesale price inflation data which may show that inflation remained high in Asia’s third biggest economy. A weak trend in most Asian markets also weighed on sentiment.

At 9:04AM, the BSE SENSEX was at 23,809.42, down by 5.7 points or by 0.02 per cent and the NSE Nifty was at 7108.75 up by 0 points or by 0 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 23,809.42 and intraday low of 23,809.42 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 7,142.25 and intraday low of 7,080.9.

Meanwhile, the BSE MIDCAP was at 7,719.8 up by 15.7 points or by 0.2 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 7,869.84, up by 10.81 points or by 0.14 per cent.

On the Sectoral front, FMCG and Banking shed 0.45 per cent and 0.11 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 361 , shares advanced were 250 while 86 shares declined and 25 were unchanged.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 769.00,-0.81%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 215.00,-0.69%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 3230.00,-0.52%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 885.00,-0.37%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 365.00,-0.18%), among others.
