Sensex jumps ahead of Modi oath

The key domestic benchmarks opened on a robust note today with the Sensex trading higher by 220 points as Dalal Street was in cheery mode ahead of the oath taking ceremony of Narendra Modi, the country’s next prime minister, today. Investors are hoping that the Modi-led BJP government could be vital in helping the country to returning to high growth rates as investment and reforms receive a boost. Most Asian stocks were trading higher as a jump in US new homes signaled confidence in the world’s biggest economy.

At 9:08AM, the BSE SENSEX was at 24,913.89, up by 220.54 points or by 0.89 per cent and the NSE Nifty was at 7,367.1, up by 90.7 points or by 1.25 per cent.

The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 24,913.89 and intraday low of 24,913.89 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 7,381 and intraday low of 7,293.9.

Meanwhile, the BSE MIDCAP was at 8,734.56, up by 66.24 points or by 0.76 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 9,200.86, up by 72.82 points or by 0.8 per cent.

On the Sectoral front, Capital goods and PSU were up 1.46 per cent and 1.39 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 769, shares advanced were 683 while 63 shares declined and 23 were unchanged.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 602.50,+3.04%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 108.20,+2.32%), State Bank of India (Rs. 2815.25,+2.18%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 406.00,+2.13%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1540.00,+1.88%), among others.
