Pre-Market: Markets set to open positive on firm global cues
26/05/2014 08:25
The Indian markets are set to witness a positive opening mirroring a mostly positive trend in the Asian peers. The markets are likely to rise in the early trade as Modi swearing in as the Prime Minister will be partly reflected in the market movement but will remain range bound as no major triggers will hit the market later today. Sun Pharma and Ranbaxy will be in focus following AP HC’s order to vacate the status-quo on the shares of the pharma giants. Another drug major, Wockhardt will be in focus as it is due to announce Q4FY14 earnings today.
Asian shares are firm on Wall Street cues. Activity could be crimped in Asia due to market holidays in London and New York today as there won’t be fresh triggers later for the day. Tokyo's Nikkei average climbed 0.7 per cent while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan stood almost flat, just shy of one-year highs hit on Friday. China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng are up by 0.38 points each whereas Japan’s NIKKEI 225 is trading above the neutral line by 0.75%. Japanese rose in a steady start for Asian equities on Monday thanks to a strong session on Wall Street, and as a decisive win for Ukrainian billionaire Petro Poroshenko in the nation's presidential election ensured a tense runoff round won't be required.
Wall Street witnessed most of the stocks move mostly higher over the course of the trading day on Friday, extending the upward move seen in the two previous sessions which helped lift the S&P 500 to a record closing high above 1,900 for the first time. The major averages ended the day firmly in positive territory, near their highs for the session. The Dow rose 63.19 points or 0.4 percent to 16,606.27, the NASDAQ advanced 31.47 points or 0.8 percent to 4,185.81 and the S&P 500 climbed 8.04 points or 0.4 percent to 1,900.53. The continued strength on Wall Street partly reflected a positive reaction to earnings news from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), with the tech giant jumping by 6.1 percent on the day. Positive sentiment was also generated by the release of a report from the Commerce Department showing that new home sales came in above economist estimates in April.
