Mid-Session: Sensex trims losses; HUL, HDFC Bank up

The Indian benchmark indices trimmed losses in afternoon session of day’s trade as losses in metal and realty stocks were offset by gains in healthcare, capital goods and FMCG sectors. Among the individual stocks, index heavyweights Sesa Sterlite, Mahindra & Mahindra, Oil And Natural Gas Corporation, Coal India and Reliance Industries, were among notable losers. The railway-related shares continue to trade mixed following the annoucements in the Rail Budget 2014.
At 12:06 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 26054.13 down by 45.95 points or by 0.18 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 7767.75 down by 19.4 points or by 0.25 per cent.
The broader market was als moving below baseline. The BSE MIDCAP was at 9533.44 down by 23.7 points or by 0.25 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10512.56 down by 58.22 points or by 0.55 per cent.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2848, shares advanced were 1084 while 1661 shares declined and 103 were unchanged.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 298.35,-2.93%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1217.90,-1.71%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 408.50,-1.60%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 392.50,-1.01%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1016.05,-1.01%), among others.
On the flip side, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1042.00,+2.41%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 736.50,+2.31%), Cipla Ltd. (Rs. 456.60,+1.62%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 632.25,+0.97%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 843.65,+0.43%), among notable gainers on BSE.
Among the thirteen sectoral indices on BSE, metal index was at 13255.67 down by 188.81 points or by 1.4 per cent. Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 298.35,-2.93%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 162.30,-1.87%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 1217.35,-1.26%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 180.50,-1.10%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 392.50,-1.01%), were among the losers on BSE.
Following the metal index, BSE Realty index was at 2070.54 down by 25.23 points or by 1.2 per cent. Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 248.50,-3.78%), Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 352.85,-2.54%), Sobha Developers Ltd. (Rs. 472.10,-2.24%), Anant Raj Ltd. (Rs. 72.50,-2.09%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 219.45,-1.68%) were among others.
