Sensex surges nearly 160 points; crosses 27,000 mark

Supported by gains in the auto and oil & gas stocks, the Indian benchmark indices were trading in green in late morning trade on Wednesday on continued buying by funds and investors amid good quarterly earnings. Firm cues from overseas as investors await the outcome of the US Federal Reserve policy meeting. Besides, covering-up of short positions by speculators ahead of monthly expiry in the derivatives segment, also lifted market sentiment. On the corporate front, the stocks of Tata Motors rises over 2.8 per cent and stocks of Mahindra & Mahindra rose over 2 per cent. Hindalco Industries, Reliance Industries and Infosys, were among others.

At 11:25 hours, the 30-share barometer index of Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex was at 27041.59 up by 160.77 points or by 0.6 per cent while the NSE Nifty was at 8062.95 up by 35.35 points or by 0.44 per cent.

The broader market was moving above baseline. The BSE MIDCAP was at 9662.28 up by 61.88 points or by 0.64 per cent, while the BSE SMLCAP was at 10797.01 up by 72.95 points or by 0.68 per cent.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was positive. On BSE out of the total 2560 shares traded, 1483 advanced while 974 shares declined and 103 remained unchanged.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 523.10,+2.85%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1303.75,+2.35%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 150.25,+1.62%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 948.80,+1.58%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 3844.50,+1.33%), among others. Meanwhile, NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 146.05,-1.18%), Sesa Sterlite Ltd. (Rs. 248.05,-0.88%), GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 491.75,-0.76%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 834.50,-0.57%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 253.75,-0.51%), were among notable losers on BSE.

Among the thirteen sectoral indices on BSE, Auto index was trading at 18207.57 up by 265.14 points or by 1.48 per cent. Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 523.10,+2.85%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1303.75,+2.35%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3075.00,+1.32%), Cummins India Ltd. (Rs. 722.30,+1.11%), Eicher Motors Ltd. (Rs. 12471.30,+0.81%), were among the notable gainers on BSE.

Following the Auto index, Oil & Gas index was at 10736 up by 118.76 points or by 1.12 per cent. Cairn India Ltd. (Rs. 284.45,+1.83%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 714.00,+1.71%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 948.80,+1.58%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 525.75,+1.53%), Oil India Ltd. (Rs. 605.00,+1.21%), were among others.
