India is home to 100 billionaires, placing Asia’s third biggest economy in sixth place in a ranking of top ten countries with most number of billionaires.
A survey by Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census 2014 showed on Wednesday that India has 100 billionaires with a combined wealth of USD 175 billion, helping it to maintain its 6th position in the top 10 league of billionaire countries. Last year, India was home to 103 billionaires.
Moreover, India has surpassed Switzerland, Hong Kong and France in terms of the number of billionaires.
While New York remains the city of the uber-rich with 103 billionaires, our very own Mumbai is home to 28 billionaires, placing it among the top 20 global billionaire cities.
The US tops the list of 40 billionaire countries/territories with 571 billionaires in 2014, followed by China in second place with 190 billionaires and the UK which is home to 130 billionaires in the third place.
Meanwhile, India’s total billionaire wealth fell by USD 5 billion from July 2013 to USD 175 billion in July 2014 as the billionaire population decreased by 3 per cent.
"The combined wealth of the world's billionaires increased by 12 per cent to $7.3 trillion, which is higher than the combined market capitalisation of all the companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average," the report said.
